Spartanburg County has a large
transportation network consisting of major highways,
airports, and railroads. In many locations throughout the
county, the potential exists that a major transportation
accident causing numerous injuries and/or fatalities may
occur. With the linear configuration of several major
highways in the County, it is also important to note that a
major transportation accident could occur in a relatively
rural area, severely stressing the capabilities of local
resources to respond effectively. Similarly, a major
transportation accident could involve a large number of
tourists and visitors from other countries, given
Spartanburg's popularity as an industrial headquarters and
college town. This further complicates the emergency
response to such an event.
